This story starts from where. Because the location in this case defines a company and speaks to a market as large as the entire world. Welcome to Reinova, which paves the way for the birth of a centre of excellence for the development and validation of components for the electric and hybrid powertrain located in the heart of the Emilian Motor Valley. Giampaolo Colletti interviews Giuseppe Corcione, CEO of Reinova, for FARE INSIEME

Why were Ferruccio Lamborghini or Enzo Ferrari born in this wonderful land of Emilia? How much of a difference did thewhere make compared to the what and how? And continuing: in these modern times how can the next Lamborghini or Ferrari always be born here? Questions, so many questions, looking for answers. But for some visionaries, the answers come from doing, not procrastinating. Now, the story we are about to tell starts from the love for the Emilia region. For its ability to enhance talent and make a difference. It is a story that brings together extreme dedication, constant research and courage to sell. Here the skills inherited from the world of internal combustion engines are rooted, but projected towards the future of electrification. The right place to think about the future of the automotive industry. The beacon that guides this enterprise is the Ferrari model: very high technology with a tailored and innovative approach. This is the story of Reinova, a company focused on a team committed to the development, testing and validation of components for the hybrid and electric powertrain. We are in the heart of the motor valley that the world envies us. This is where the idea of a centre of excellence to provide answers to local companies was born. A solution to convert to the future. A way to stimulate new minds on new electrified powertrains, opening up new opportunities. A forty-six-year-old mechatronics engineer born in Naples and who lived in Marigliano did not hesitate to stake on Emilia. In his pocket, a degree obtained abroad, specifically in the United States, and a life as a globetrotter because in the last twenty years he always lived far from Italy. Then the return to Italy on the day of the lockdown to follow the entrepreneurial rather than managerial spirit. A family passion, his was. His father was the director of the Istituto Motori of Naples for a long time and he followed him around the world. Then in 2019 Giuseppe Corcione - this is the name of the entrepreneur who chose Emilia for his business - began to study the established electrified traction systems, registering patents with important developments. «We do traction electrification one hundred percent. Electric motors and all power electronics. Development, testing, approval. We are the only ones in the world to offer an integrated solution», says Giuseppe Corcione, CEO of Reinova, awarded in Campidoglio at the Presidency of the Council of Ministers among the highest Italian excellences from a technological point of view.

Company profile . Let's go back to where, which is very important in this story. We are in Soliera, a town of fifteen thousand souls in the Modena area north of the main town. We are in the Unione delle Terre d'Argine, together with the municipalities of Carpi, Novi di Modena and Campogalliano. But we are also 10 kilometres from Modena and 8 kilometres from Carpi. It is a valuable district. Because - and we have also said this many times - districts, even if networked and interconnected, still exist today. And they leave their mark: this is how sustainable solutions and services are offered for the conversion to electrification in the mobility sector. «We needed a connection of over ten megawatts and here there is a water section with an aquifer that helps us cool the systems we have on board. Then the proximity to Carpi and the link with the Brenner Pass make the difference», says Corcione. The company has 106 people addressed to an international market that is 70%, having the main players in the global automotive industry among its customers. The turnover is 12 million euros, with a forecast of over 15 million for this year. This creates a centre of excellence for the development and validation of components for the electric and hybrid powertrain located in the heart of the Emilian Motor Valley. «This market is experiencing a period of great change and is not evolving towards a single dominant technology, but towards a combination of different technologies, such as batteries, fuel cells, hydrogen and fixed-point internal combustion engines. The key element of this evolution will not be technology itself, but the software applied to the vehicles», explains Corcione.

The hybrid powertrain. But to understand the strength of this company we must start from a key concept, namely the hybrid powertrain, which is a combination of different energy sources that contribute to the traction of the vehicle, such as electric and thermal, electric and fuel cells or fuel cells and internal combustion engine. Research focuses on innovative materials and software development. Here we try to connect the dots. After all, in the programmatic manifesto we read that Reinova was born from the idea of linking tradition and innovation, local and international. «We combine the Emilian tradition in the development of advanced technical solutions for vehicles with innovation in the application of software, simulation and innovative techniques to consolidated technologies. This combination of tradition and innovation allows us to reach a high technological level, reducing costs and times. In this constantly evolving sector, human capital is fundamental. Our professionals must have curiosity, observation skills, an open mind and the strength to adapt technologies from other sectors to the automotive market», concludes Corcione. In the meantime, we are working to become leaders in software, artificial intelligence and predictive systems. Technologies turned on by people, this is the recipe for excellent organisations.
