“If people focused on the really important things in life, there would be a shortage of fishing rods”. It is a phrase that Doug Larson, historic American journalist, a sagacious signature of the last century, often loved to repeat. The story we are about to tell starts precisely from a fishing rod, but actually goes much further. Because it manages to fish, metaphorically speaking, in other industries and to fill new needs. Here too, the recipe for doing so is always the same and it is that of the virtuous fisherman: lots and lots of patience, the ability to pick up the weak signals, and the ability to take sudden and decisive actions, without hesitation. But let's get back to the story of the business, which takes us back quite a few years. It all started in 1962 from the idea of two friends who became business partners: Giovanni Pasella and Otello Sirotti. Little experience, lots of ambition and clear ideas: to create plastic boxes and containers for sport fishing. Actually, Giovanni Pasella first opened a cork factory for the creation of corks and for the handles of fishing rods. He took the use of cork from Sardinia, then brought it to Emilia and managed to intercept a network of customers in the fishing industry. Then from there, as we often say, one thing leads to another. And so the company entered the world of containers. In fact, it used its knowledge to enter plastic packaging and packaging lines, which was something completely new. In short, from a fishing box to boxes on various lines in almost all product categories. Today, packaging is the main business, while fishing remains more lateral but iconic as a division.

Company profile
. This is the story of Panaro, now in the third generation of the family business with a management presently entrusted to three families: Pasella, Sirotti and Rizzi. How much progress has been made from that small family workshop of fishing boxes! Thus, Panaro has evolved over the years, exponentially increasing its range of products. The company now boasts 98 employees for 1,500 active customers worldwide and a turnover of over 25 million euros. The market looks beyond national borders for 60% of the total.  Thinking and doing: the company has two factories and is committed to designing and developing hundreds of innovative solutions to organise and protect any type of equipment. Technical boxes and cases of different sizes, lines and characteristics; from the most standard and economical industrial ones, through the revolutionary EKO line in 100% recycled polypropylene up to the hermetic, ultra-resistant ones of MAX brand with military certifications, the real flagship of the company for technical quality, economic importance and global awareness of the brand. “For over 60 years we have been developing plastic solutions for our customers’ equipment”, one can read on the website. The production plant is based in Marano sul Panaro, while logistics and offices are in Vignola, a town of twenty-five thousand souls in the Modena area. «We provide increasingly innovative products at a competitive price, without ever sacrificing the quality of the production processes and in full compliance with the most important industrial protocols and certifications. Our distinctive elements have always been the Made in Italy design and production, the high production flexibility and twenty-four-hour production, and the wide possibility of customising the products for our customers», says Damiano Pasella, Marketing Director and grandson of the founder.

The eco-friendly challenges.
From doing business to doing it in a sustainable way, or as they say today being eco-friendly.«We have always been attentive to sustainability and have constantly invested in initiativesand processes to minimise our environmental impact», says Pasella. The bond with the territory has always been strong. «For years we have been in dialogue with the municipal administrations of the Terre dei Castelli Union to participate in initiatives that involve our cities; we are in contact with high schools and employment agencies to support the training and job placement of recent high school and college graduates, considering it a priority to find candidates residing in our territory.» Today, 80% of employees live within a radius of ten kilometres from the company. What about the future? In the name of awareness. Plastic evolves and is not an absolute evil, but what matters is how it is produced, managed, transported. «We are committed to a zero-emission production, electric or hybrid, and all our production waste is reused. Especially for those who make plastic components and objects, waste is the norm, but for us there is a way to avoid it internally and with our network of suppliers», concludes Pasella. Continue to fish, with the heart and with the head. In short, with passion and awareness. Here’s the right balance for successful organisations.
