What is best about a border
is being able to cross it. This is also true for those in-between lands that
guard the strength of welcoming, the courage of experimenting and the
capability of synthesizing season after season. This is what has been happening
for over half a century in that piece of land stretching from the end of Emilia
to the beginning of Romagna. Family and business, synthesized in a single
history. Welcome to Dalfiume Nobilvini, a passion for wine-making that has
lasted three generations. It produces local wines such as Pignoletto or
Sangiovese, the king of Romagna that exists in both the Superiore and Riserva
versions. And also Albana, so structured
that it can be vinified into both dry or dessert wine. Then there is Trebbiano,
and more: this bit of land can exalt international grape varieties as well such
as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, generating wines with a distinct
personality. “We have tried
transforming the best expressions and values of our brave and welcoming
territory into a business to make them a heritage everybody can enjoy. When we
make our wines, we forget about the passing of time. Our dedication and
commitment lead us to continuous challenges, fuelled by pure passion, which
thus guarantee high-quality in full compliance with the best agronomic and
oenological traditions”, explains
Davide Dalfiume, Sole Administrator at Dalfiume Nobilvini.
The
story of a company at the top. A history spanning seventy years, as we have
mentioned. A history that starts far away from the long rows of trees between
Emilia and Romagna. We find ourselves in Castel San Pietro Terme, the gate to
the genuine and passionate Romagna hinterland. The business was set up by
Odoardo Dalfiume. The next generation of the brothers Franco and Gianni
Dalfiume took the company into the 1970s, turning it into a structured business
leader in its field for productive capacity and for the commercialization of
typical wines from Emilia and Romagna. It was 1949 when Odoardo Dalfiume
decided to turn his passion for wine into a job. Everything started in Bologna
in Via Massarenti - just outside the city walls - where Casa Vinicola Dalfiume
was set up. The Second World War had just ended, the country needed to be
rebuilt and the gaze turned once again to the future thanks to a shared will
for growth and redemption. After changing headquarters a couple of times, the
Alberici Cleto cellar was purchased in Castel San Pietro Terme in 1975. It was
the turning point - returning back home, back to the origins. “Tenuta Poggiolo” was purchased in 1991 and
became the family wine-making company as well as a local excellence: over 70 hectares
historically dedicated to vine cultivation, where the care for each single
plantlet is found in daily actions that express the love for the vines, the integrity
of the territory and the respect for tradition. The third generation started
running the company in the mid-1990s with the arrival of Davide and Silvia, Franco
and Gianni’s children. From
wine bars and shops to big retail chain stores with a larger market share.
This third generation
continued the journey started by their grandfather to this day. Two brands and
a family history: “Dalfiume
Nobilvini” and “Villa Poggiolo”. “We produce our wines with two different
labels to meet all kinds of needs. Nonetheless, they both share a common
element - they bring the values of Emilia-Romagna to the table. The world of
wine and the territory form an unbreakable combination that is blunt, delicate,
respectful yet bold. The territory and its vineyards are our biggest treasure,” stresses Dalfiume.
Research and supply chain. Today, Dalfiume
Group boasts a turnover of €4 million with 23 employees and is looking ahead
towards the global market. “Our DNA features all of the company's values: a
heritage deeply rooted in our origins, the propensity for innovation that
originates from a constantly-evolving wine-making vision, the ongoing search
for excellence and the attention to sustainability made possible by
agricultural and wine-making practices that fully respect the land and the
vines and which are also applied in the cellar and to all production phases,” explains Dalfiume. Research
plays a significant part in all the aspects of production: from the vineyard to
the cellar down to each production and commercial phase as making wines means
covering the entire chain. “Today, research is important in vineyards to try
to adapt to the big climate changes that force us to pay attention to all
aspects of vine cultivation. But in this sector research also applies to the
bottling phase as well as, over the past two years, we have made considerable
investments that enable us to guarantee not only the high-quality of raw
materials but also the utmost productive rigour to our consumers,” stresses Dalfiume. A
balance between authenticity, genuineness and technology. “All this is pursued
working on raw materials, investing in human capital and training and following
the progress of wine in the cellar day after day, using only the essential wine
products if they prove indeed necessary and using state-of-the-art plants and
machinery. Only the desire to be part of the life of consumers who love wine
and choose to drink some everyday or only when they go out remains unchanged. To
manage things at our best, we need to innovate by renewing the tools necessary
and investing in the future and in ourselves,” concludes Dalfiume. Day
after day with skill, dedication and courage. Cheers!
